If you’re storing your golf cart for the summer don’t make the same mistake I did.

I had parked my golf cart for the summer and had it covered up sitting outside. My granddaughter was over to visit. This was late September and the golf cart had not moved for probably five months. She was quite insistent that we go for a ride. I uncovered it and then fired up, and I noticed on the floor before we took off, there was some shredded paper and stuff. I didn’t really pay much attention to it because there was leaves that had blown up under the cover.

I said, do you smell something, like something’s burning? And she said, yeah, and about that time we saw a little bit of smoke coming out from under the seat, and I immediately pulled over. We jumped off. The smoke started rolling out of there, and then all of a sudden it burst into flames.

After I visited with the fire department, they. And told them what I saw before we took off. They said there’s not much question what happened here? You had rodents build a nest on the muffler or part of the engine that got hot when you took off, and eventually that material caught fire, started the whole thing and of course, it was a gas golf cart. The gas tank is plastic. Guess what? It melted, then the fire really took off.

If you’re going to store your golf cart for a period of time, be sure to lift up the seat and look under there. I don’t care if it’s electric or gas, look under there. Make sure there isn’t some strange little guys at work there.
