You need to check your utility bills while you’re gone.

The reason is if you see something way out of whack, such as a water bill or an electrical bill, then there’s got to be a reason. If we’re monitoring your house, we’re checking for leaks everywhere. But it’s possible that we might not see one such as a leak underground in a pool.

‘ll give you a specific example. I met with some people the other day that hired me to watch her house this summer. They said last summer they got a $700 water bill while they were gone. Not using any water to speak of except the pool. Well, the pool was leaking. I had another client tell me that last summer when they were gone and nobody was watching the house, they got a $240 water bill and they had a neighbor go over and check to see what was going on and the toilet was running.

It had been running apparently for weeks, and they ran up a pretty big water bill. If you get an electric bill that looks unusually high, you need to let us know. It’s possible that even if you have a smart thermostat, that it gets out of whack. We check it every time we’re there, but it’s also possible that something could go crazy.
